As a transfer student at the University of Minnesota, I was always looking for ways to make new friends. I decided to take a Tae Kwon Do class where I could meet people while also tucking a new skill under my belt.
One of my girlfriends in another class of mine urged me to say hello to her friend “Bob.” I decided to wait until we were sparring each other so as not to seem to eager.
One day it just so happened that Bob and I were supposed to practice our new fighting moves together. I enthusiastically introduced myself and explained that we had a mutual friend.
Before he could really reply, the instructor started shouting directions in half korean and I could not make out his words.
I thought he shouted “Grab Thigh…Grab Thigh!”. Since students get in trouble for not listening to a Tae Kwon Do master, I immediately grabbed Bob’s thigh. My opponent quickly sprung into action and twisted my arm around my back.
Unfortunately his thumb became stuck in my bra strap. He tried to dislodge it and consequently made a very loud snapping noise.
Fortunately, class ended quickly, but the embarrassing moments did not. My roommate, who was in the same class, informed me that we were not supposed to grab our oponents thigh, rather pretend that we were going to hit them.
Feeling very sheepish, I tried to avoid him the next day of class. Apparently, he was not offended by my mislead hand though, and continued to talk to me. After we had known each other for a couple of months, he invited me to hang out with him at his apartment.
I thought we were “just friends” and I made that point very obvious when I tried to sit as far away as possible from him. This body language did not deter him though and he scooped me up and held me in his arms. I had never felt so awkard in my life, but did not want to hurt his feelings so I sat there until the movie we were watching ended.
I then convinced him that I needed to go home. Upon arriving at my apartment, we started saying our goodbyes. He leaned in for a hug, or I should say he leaned in for what I thought was a hug! I immediately turned my head so our heads wouldn’t collide and I heard a loud smacking noise next to my ear. The swift turn of my head had caused him to misplace his kiss, causing him to make smacking noises towards the sky.
Realizing that we had both misread body language again, we turned extremely red, mumbled apologies and never hung out again.
